From FFT to GPT – My Journey as a Woman in Signal Processing

Wednesday, 6 May 2026, 12:30 – 14:30

Abstract: Beginning in a very different technological era, as one of the few women in Electrical Engineering, I will share personal insights and reflections with the WISP community on the experiences of women in science and technology. I will highlight the exchange in both directions: how tools and ways of thinking from Electrical Engineering have shaped my public and leadership roles, and how leadership perspectives have influenced my approach to engineering and research. Drawing on multiple examples—including my own work—I will discuss how female engineers can serve as a driving force for disruptive leadership in technology.

Hagit Messer received her Ph.D. from Tel Aviv University (TAU), Israel, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University. She joined TAU’s Faculty of Engineering in 1986 and is now Professor Emerita in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Over her career, she has held senior leadership roles, including Chief Scientist at Israel’s Ministry of Science, Vice President for Research at TAU, President of The Open University of Israel, and Vice Chair of the Council for Higher Education. In 2016, she co-founded ClimaCell. A Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), she received the 2024 IEEE Medal for Environmental and Safety Technologies for contributions to environmental sensing via wireless networks. She has published extensively, supervised over 100 graduate students, and actively promotes women in science, technology transfer, and ethics in research and innovation.
